about

“And in each life we meet, you’re the only one I love.”

There’s a kind of love that transcends time and space, and it follows us in each life that we live and we are utterly powerless against it. Do we fall into the same patterns again and again, or do we finally have the courage to break the cycles? What if only one of you is trying to break them? How can you make things right? I’ve never talked about what this song means or who or what it’s about. It’s one of those things that is truly mine, 100%, my own precious treasure of my heart I share with the whole world, but I am the only one who knows its secrets. In that way, it’s the most personal thing I’ve ever written.

I had written these extended lyrics when I was first brainstorming the song. Unfortunately, I didn’t time the drum machines out quite enough (because they were about to die at any moment!!!), and some of the lyrics just didn’t match the original programming. I’d been wanting to re-record this piece for a while, but didn’t know how to go about it. The LP version of RINGSIDE on “All the Queen’s Men, Vol. 1” was more of a “can I write a 4-to-the floor pop song?” exercise. (IDK if it’s actually 4/4, but you know).

Donna Summer is the touchstone for it; no one understands storytelling and emotion the way that she did. I wanted to take it back a decade or a half--less “She Works Hard for the Money” and more “On the Radio.” I enlisted the help of my good friend Jason Yeager, acclaimed jazz pianist, recording artist and Berkelee professor--you want to talk about a genius, jeez! His touch was just what this new version needed--it ebbs and flows in waves, it aches in a way the LP recording doesn’t,-- and Jason’s work on the Wurlitzer is stunning.

Like it's predecessor, the La Brea Version is as haunted and wonky as the LP version.

lyrics

I gotta ringside seat
I watch you fuck it up
is my forgiveness weak
and are you man enough?

but I don't wanna lose you this time

I gave you a child,
I wouldn't be your wife
cos you're JUST a child
no matter the life

I was there in Bolinas
there in Pompeii
I held your hand in Lexington
I'm always there to save the
mother fuckin'
day

but I don't wanna lose you this time

Go ahead, ignore her
But nobody puts Baby in the corner

when they're important
and you're passe
until it's time for you to save
that motherfuckin' day

but I don't wanna lose you this time

I gotta ringside seat
I watch us fuck it up
and in each life we meet
you're the only one I love

you're the only one

Be my witness

Don't make me take your car keys
you and I can work this out
don't forget that I'm your baby

Don't leave me behind
I'm on your side
You know I never lied

be my witness
be--
you know I never lied

(I love you)
